Birth to 8 Ribbon Cutting

Friday was an exciting day. I attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for a brand-new Birth to Age 8 Early Childhood Community Center in the City of New London!

The building behind us will now be home to a new joint endeavor between our City and our school district – working in unison to support young children and their families.

CHESS: Connecticut Housing Engagement and Support Services

We have taken a significant step forward to assure access to quality healthcare for all members of our community. Connecticut has received federal approval to provide healthcare to the homeless and the opportunity to significantly bolster our efforts to uplift homeless individuals.

Connecticut’s housing programs will partner with state agencies and local nonprofits to provide Medicaid and HUSKY Health coverage. The program will be known as CHESS – the Connecticut Housing Engagement and Support Services Initiative.

This coordinated effort will guarantee individuals have access to basic needs like housing, meals, and healthcare. This health coverage will also ensure everyone has access to mental health and substance abuse support.

In addition, CHESS will create lasting change for the homeless community. Housing instability and serious health concerns often go hand in hand. CHESS will help promote community engagement and improve the overall quality of life.
