Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I hope you and your family have been enjoying the Warmer days and brighter times of the  Spring.

My legislative responsibilities in Hartford have been keeping me busy, but I am happy to provide an update on the gun control legislation voted out of the Judiciary committee, the bills I am working on, forums I have attended, and upcoming events within in our community.

As always, I write this message with our community foremost in my mind. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, concerns or issues you maybe facing.

GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION

As a member of the Judiciary Committee I voted to approve legislation to reduce gun violence, including mass shootings, community violence, domestic violence, suicides and accidental shootings.

This week's tragedy in Nashville shows that gun violence continues to plague our country. We have also had a recent spate of gun violence on the streets of our cities here in Connecticut.

HB 6667, An Act Addressing Gun Violence, seeks to tackle the issue in a profound and needed way since the last time we had a serious look at our statutes in the wake of Sandy Hook.

Connecticut has the resolve and will to implement legislation that respects the rights of law-abiding and responsible Americans but not at the expense of public safety.

HB 6667 contains good, commonsense public policy proposals aimed at preventing terrible tragedies. One incident of gun violence is too many, which is why I am dedicated to curtailing it and working to pass this bill.

BILLS I AM WORKING ON

I believe that all people deserve to earn a fair wage. I am proud to co-sponsor Senate Bill 1177, which will eliminate the subminimum wage and create one, fair minimum wage for all Connecticut residents.

Currently, subminimum wages allow restaurant workers to be paid less than Connecticut’s set minimum wage. This is not just or fair.

If passed, this bill will eliminate the subminimum wage and allow all residents to earn a fair, minimum wage regardless of any disability or place of employment.

WOMENS HISTORY CONVERSATION

We had a great conversation with the student leaders of UCONN Stamford during our Women’s History Month Roundtable.

It was great to connect with our students and to hear the issues that are important to them. Our government requires participation and partnership at all levels, and I am proud to have the opportunity to the concerns of our state’s next generation of leaders.

I would like to thank Planned Parenthood, State Representative Rachel Khanna, State Representative Anabel Figueroa, Ms. Petrina Bamfo, and who helped to put together our roundtable event

VOTING RIGHTS FOURM

Earlier this week I participated as a panelist for a town hall on the CT Voting Rights Act, a key policy that I am co-sponsoring this legislative session.

The Town Hall brought people together from different backgrounds to discuss the issue of voting rights. We provided a platform for citizens to voice their concerns and opinions about the current state of voting rights in our communities, and it gave an opportunity for my fellow lawmakers and activists give important information on the Voting Right Bill we are fighting for.

The right to vote is a fundamental aspect of democracy, and it is essential that every citizen has equal access to this right.

I would like to give a warm thank you to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, ACLU, and State Representative Corey Paris for joining me at our town hall.

YOUNG ACTIVISTS
Last week I met with the incredible young activists of LiveGirl during their first Advocacy Day at the Capitol!

I was honored to hear them advocate for women's refugee rights, the fight against teen domestic violence, protections against cyberbullying, mental health equity, and ending child marriage.

These young activists are an example of the limitless potential of each person to be a force for positive change in our community.

Their bravery and professionalism is inspiring, and I would like to wholeheartedly thank them for fighting to let young women be seen and heard in our community.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Please join Rep. Paris and I as we welcome Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas to our amazing city on Friday, April 14 at our Stamford UCONN Campus!
