Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I hope you are enjoying the warmer weather and brighter times.

We were back in session for the first time in a few weeks! We worked on Judicial, Executive & Legislative nominations as well as a few key pieces of legislation.

This is the time of year when my colleagues and I will be in the capitol more frequently to start debating and passing new legislation, and I will be sure to keep you posted on our progress!

Further in this email I have included information on the bills you pass through the house, the actions I have taken in the community, resources, and funding we have brought back to Stamford.

BILLS WE PASSED

A workforce training plan for green jobs is essential to support Connecticut’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals. HB 6354 includes several provisions to accomplish those goals and a strategy to market and recruit individuals, especially from underrepresented populations.

HB 6678 ensures that nursing home organizations statewide are more transparent about their financial situation. Transparency is an important step towards meaningful elder care reform.

ONE FAIR WAGE

Last week, my colleagues and I stepped into the shoes of restaurant servers to highlight the need to pass One Fair Wage for tipped workers in CT.

We took orders, waited tables, and talked about the importance of raising the subminimum wage for our CT employees.

Senate Bill 1177 would eliminate the $6.38 subminimum wage for servers in CT, and the policy would have CT join the 7 other states who currently give tipped workers full minimum wage + tips.

Our restaurants are an important part of the cultural and economic health of our community. I would like to encourage everyone to visit Stamford to support the incredible restaurants.

I would also like to thank Senator Pat Billie Miller, Representative Anne Hughes, and Representative Anabel Figueroa for joining me in raising awareness on SB 1177.

STANDING WITH COLLEAGUES

Earlier this week my colleagues and I stood together to highlight our stances on reproductive health and resources we have brought back to our community.

First, I attended a press conference to highlight the $2.7 million in grants to Stamford public schools that will be used for air filtration system upgrades in schools. These grants are part of the $450 million dollars our administration is providing for HVAC upgrades throughout Connecticut.

I then traveled to Stamford Hospital where I was joined by my fellow legislators, the Lt. Gov, and medical professionals to make it clear: Mifepristone is still available, without restriction. Together, we are committed to ensuring that women continue to have access to the highest quality care and support services.

I would like to thank Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz, Mayor Caroline Simmons and the Stamford legislative delegation for joining me and being such wonderful, hardworking partners.

FUNDING FOR STAMFORD

I am proud to say that we have secured $282,667 for Stamford Arts and Cultural establishments and groups across the city.

These fine art institutions are instrumental to Stamford. From the Avon Theatre Film Center to the Stamford Museum and Nature Center, all our art and cultural centers and groups provide entertainment and essential creativity to the city.  They also bring in large amounts of tourism and provide financial support to Stamford.

I have had the pleasure to visit and tour many of these institutions and look forward to visiting again in the future. I will continue to support our arts and cultural establishments in the state legislature, any way I can.

And if you haven’t already, I hope you and your family will visit, enjoy, and support all these amazing places and groups. They are run by wonderful, creative, and hardworking people, and are truly highlights of our great city.

BILLS I AM WORKING ON

SB 938 - AN ACT CONCERNING UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS FOR STRIKING WORKERS is another bill I am proud to support.

The right to strike is a safeguard for workers across the state. If passed, SB 938 would ensure that those who strike for two weeks or longer and who are not receiving pay can receive unemployment benefits.

This way, SB 938 ensures that workers are adequately compensated as they fight for better pay, better benefits, and better working conditions.

If you have any issues, concerns, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! Please feel free to contact me at 860-240-8585 if you ever need anything or by email at hubert.delany@cga.ct.gov

Sincerely,

Hubert Delany
