Let's Talk About It: Elderly Abuse Prevention & Early Voting

June 15, 2023

Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz and Windham Mayor Tom DeVivo joined my weekly public affairs show, “Let’s Talk About It,” to dig deeper into the importance of protecting our elderly population. It is no secret that more seniors are being targeted for financial and physical abuse because they own property, retirement funds, and other resources.

Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz visited the Windham Senior Center on June 15, which is Elder Abuse Day, to raise awareness about the campaign. She, other leaders, and I informed seniors of the state offices and resources that are trying to protect them such as Aging and Disabilities Services, the American Association of Retired Persons, and the Department of Banking.

If you know a senior who is a victim of financial fraud, contact the Elder Justice Hotline at (860) 808-5555. The Attorney General’s Office staffs the line Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. If you are calling after hours, please leave a message and your call will be returned as soon as possible.

You can also call the Elderly Protective Services Unit at 1-888-385-4225 if you suspect a senior is being abuse or neglected. CLICK HERE to learn more.

During our conversation, we switched gears and also talked about early voting. The Connecticut General Assembly passed a measure allowing for early voting starting in 2024. Eligible voters will be able to cast their ballots in person ahead of Election Day for both regular and special elections, as well as primaries.

We also broke down House Joint Resolution 1, which also passed during the legislative session. The measure will allow all constituents to decide if we amend the state constitution to allow no-excuse absentee voting on the 2024 general election ballot.
