Major Upgrades Coming to Milford Rails

November 9, 2023

Commuters in Milford will benefit from a major investment into our rails. The federal government is providing up to $365.24 million to upgrade and eventually replace Devon Bridge, which connects Stratford and Milford. This will be a two-step project with additional funding coming from the Connecticut Department of Transportation and Amtrak.

The first step will be interim repairs on Devon Bridge to the tune of $119 million. According to the Federal Railroad Association (FRA), the funds will cover project development, final design, and construction to keep the 118-year-old bridge up and running safely. The repairs are intended to extend the bridge’s life until the future full replacement, which is the second part of the project.

The feds are kicking in another $245.9 million for project development and final design for replacing the four-track bridge. The FRA says the new Devon Bridge will allow Amtrak and Metro-North trains to go from 40 mph to 70 mph and reduce moveable bridge failures.

The good news does not end there. The federal government is spending millions more on upgrading the New Haven Line.
