Updates from State Rep. Travis Simms for March 6, 2026

March 6, 2026

Few things bring me greater joy than reading to kids. Today, as part of Read Across America, I read to second-grade and pre-K children at South Norwalk School Extension, along with Principal Randall Austin and Assistant Principal Francheska Rodriguez.

International Women's Day

State leaders gathered today to recognize International Women’s Day and Equal Pay Day, highlighting the ongoing effort to achieve wage equity and economic opportunity for women across Connecticut.

At the event, Susan Bysiewicz emphasized this year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” noting that when individuals, organizations, and communities invest in supporting women and families, everyone benefits. While the Equal Pay Act of 1963 made wage discrimination based on sex illegal more than 60 years ago, she said women continue to face pay gaps and barriers to economic independence today. She also pointed out that the wage gap affects women differently depending on race, underscoring the need for continued progress.

Legislative leaders reinforced the importance of women’s representation in government. Donna Veach Vahey encouraged more women to consider public service, noting that women currently make up about 37% of the legislature. She stressed that when women are at the table, issues that disproportionately impact women—like pay equity, childcare, and family support—become priorities that benefit everyone.

Mae Flexer highlighted Connecticut’s commitment to addressing inequality and ensuring the state continues to lead on policies that support women and working families.

Governor Ned Lamont reaffirmed the administration’s goal of making Connecticut a more family-friendly state, emphasizing that the state is focused on delivering real results—not just speeches—when it comes to supporting families and workers.

Speakers also stressed the importance of affordable childcare, noting that accessible and inexpensive childcare allows more women to participate fully in the workforce.

The event also included young women from the YMCA Youth and Government Program, who stood behind the speakers—symbolizing the next generation of leaders working toward a more equitable future.
