Cellphones have become a major part of our lives. While these devices can be useful, phones have also proven to be addictive and distracting, particularly for children, who can struggle to create meaningful connections and develop relationships at school when screens constantly compete for their attention.
The House advanced House Bill 5035 with bipartisan support to remove cellphones from our classrooms. The measure implements a bell-to-bell ban on students' personal devices during the school day, similar to policies adopted in states like New York. By limiting distractions, this policy will help our children to further connect with their peers and educators, strengthen their attention spans, and enhance their learning ability.
Here in Milford, I’ve heard from parents and educators who are concerned about the impact smartphones have on classroom instruction and student well-being. Our teachers work hard to create engaging learning environments, and this measure supports those efforts.
While House Bill 5035 does not fully remove technology as a distraction, it is a great step in the right direction to give our students the best school experience possible.
The Senate has until midnight on May 6 to act on this measure. |
