Fighting for Democracy & Celebrating Juneteenth in Hartford

June 18, 2025

Thousands gathered in Hartford and across the country to make it clear that our country is a democracy, not a dictatorship. The protests took aim at the president's abuse of power. I'll break down why this movement is so important.

What happened over the weekend in Minnesota was both horrifying and deeply saddening -- a blatant political attack on two lawmakers that has shaken us all. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families as they face unimaginable grief. This kind of violence has absolutely no place in our society.

Thursday, June 19 is Juneteenth, which celebrates the end of slavery in our country. I'll let you know where you can join the community in recognizing Black culture, history, and achievement.

Fighting For Democracy

This weekend's No Kings protest sent a powerful and urgent message across the nation: the United States is a democracy, not a monarchy. From coast to coast, thousands gathered to stand up for the core values our country was founded on: freedom, accountability, and the rule of law.

In Hartford, one of the largest protests took place on the steps of the State Capitol, where Connecticut joined in solidarity with Americans everywhere who are deeply concerned about the president's unlawful use of power, particularly the recent actions by ICE in California. These federal actions were illegal and disregarded both due process and state protections.

Our democracy cannot function if any one person, even the president, believes they are above the law. That's why so many are speaking out to defend the rights of immigrants and vulnerable families while preserving the very foundation of our government. We must resist any attempt to turn our republic into a dictatorship in disguise. The No Kings movement is a nationwide call to action, and Connecticut is proud to be a part of that fight.

Senseless Political Violence

I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families affected by the horrifying political violence in Minnesota last week. The senseless murders of former Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, is a heartbreaking loss for their loved ones, colleagues, and the entire state. I am also keeping State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in my thoughts as they recover from this brutal attack in their own home. I wish them strength and healing in the days ahead.

This was a politically motivated assassination – an act of domestic terrorism. It was not simply an attack on individuals; it was an attack on the very foundation of our democracy. Violence must never be tolerated as a response to political disagreement. We must all stand united – regardless of party – in condemning extremism and ensuring that public servants can do their work without fear for their lives or the safety of their families.

Now is the time for courage, not complacency. We must take meaningful steps to protect those who serve and recommit to the democratic society rooted in civility, respect, and the rule of law.

Join a Freedom Event Honoring Juneteenth

This Thursday, June 19, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day of reflection, resilience, and pride. It marks the moment in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

For many years, this important holiday was primarily celebrated in the South, but thanks to great advocacy work, it is now observed throughout the country. In 2022, the Connecticut General Assembly voted to make Juneteenth a state holiday.

Juneteenth is both a powerful reminder of the enduring struggle for justice and a joyful recognition of Black culture, community, and achievement.

You and your family are invited to join the community at "Freedom Day" on Thursday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Connecticut Science Center. Some of the highlights include:

  • Juneteenth-themed scavenger hunt with key moments in the journey to freedom
  • Live science programming showcasing achievements of Black scientists and inventors
  • Hands-on learning with dynamic demonstrations

Discover why Juneteenth is celebrated and how it marks a pivotal moment in American history through informative signage. It’s a day to honor the past, celebrate progress, and spark curiosity.

Celebrating Father's Day
Here in Hartford and West Hartford, I've seen firsthand the dedication of so many hardworking dads who do everything they can to support their children and strengthen our neighborhoods. Your efforts do not go unnoticed.

I hope all the incredible fathers and father figures in our community celebrated a peaceful, joyful, and well-deserved Father's Day.
