July 29, 2025

The community is coming together to improve trust between residents and our police officers at National Night Out. Please keep scrolling to learn when and where this free event is taking place and how your kids can get a free backpack.

We are in the middle of another stretch of dangerously hot weather. I'll let you know where you can stay cool in your neighborhood in case you do not have air conditioning.

The state is in mourning after a volunteer firefighter tragically died in the line of duty in Plainville.

These are the sections in today's email:

Join Me for National Night Out!

I invite you to join me at National Night Out at Goodwin Park next week. This is an opportunity for the community to meet with police officers and develop new bonds in a stress-free environment.

This free event, which includes food, prizes, and live music, will place on Tuesday, August 5 from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the South Street Entrance of Goodwin Park.

The first 100 students who attend will receive a free backpack full of school supplies courtesy of Bank of America's Hispanic Organization for Leadership and Advancement (HOLA)!

National Night Out is an annual community building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer. The event provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

You are welcome to attend a different National Night Out event taking place from 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on August 5 at the Boys and Girls Club of Hartford at 170 Sigourney Street in Hartford. There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony unveiling a renovated parking lot at the facility.

Staying Cool in Dangerous Heat

Connecticut’s Extreme Hot Weather Protocol is in effect from now through at least 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30. Cooling centers will be available in Hartford, West Hartford, and throughout the state. Anyone in need of a place to escape the heat at our nearest cooling centers including:

Remembering a Fallen Firefighter

I join the Hartford Fire Department and the rest of the state in sharing my condolences with the family and loved ones of volunteer firefighter Raymond ‘Ray’ Moreau, who died in the line of duty on Sunday in Plainville. May we never forget his bravery and service.

Firefighter Moreau dedicated himself to protecting his community as well as showing courage and selflessness every day. His passing is a profound loss for Plainville, for Connecticut, and for all who knew and served alongside him.

Officials said Moreau served the Plainville Fire Department for 35 years as a volunteer. He was also a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Governor Ned Lamont has ordered flags in Connecticut to be lowered to half-staff in Moreau's memory.
