Friends and Neighbors,

I hope this correspondence finds you well. We have had some unsettling weather this week, but brighter days are coming! Monday will be interesting as a total eclipse will cover Connecticut between 2:15 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Some schools in the state will be letting students out early because of the risk of an eye injury if the eclipse is viewed without special equipment. There's more information about it below, as well as a put the phone away campaign this month, which is also Distracted Driving Awareness month. There is an autism event at the Capitol later this month I wanted to make you aware of, and I added a reminder about available assistance with unpaid utility bill balances. It's National Volunteer Month. This weekend is the Final Four. Go Huskies! Enjoy the newsletter, which begins with an update on legislation that shows our commitment to childcare affordability.

Have a great weekend,

Travis

A Commitment to Childcare Affordability
House Democrats have made it a top priority during this legislative session to address the issue of childcare affordability. HB 5002 focuses on making childcare more accessible and affordable for families through long-term strategic investments. This is a significant measure that could positively impact many families in our community.

I am proud to support this proposal, as childcare plays a crucial role in nurturing the growth and well-being of our children while also strengthening the economy by supporting parents and guardians. By improving accessibility and affordability, we are investing in our community's future and providing relief to individuals striving to balance work and family life.

This bill is about more than just numbers; it's about making a tangible difference in the lives of families who deserve access to quality, affordable childcare. Together, we can ensure that this legislation reflects the needs and priorities of the families it aims to serve.

Put The Phone Away Campaign Is Underway
Folks, the state is reminding all drivers that when they get behind the wheel, it would be wise to Put the Phone Away or Pay. This campaign is underway for National Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April. Please be mindful, that law enforcement will be stepping up its enforcement of distracted-driving laws through April 30.
Another reminder: it’s illegal to use any hand-help mobile electronic device while driving in Connecticut. In addition, 16 and 17-year-old drivers are not allowed to use a hands-free accessory. Fines start at $200, then go to $375, and $625 for a third offense.

Total Solar Eclipse on Monday
In a dramatic news bulletin Monday morning NASA announced a major correction to the path of the great American Solar Eclipse predicted to occur on April 8th. Totality is now predicted all over Connecticut. No need to drive far, it is coming to a theater near you! Click on the image below for more details.

Autism: Raising Awareness At The Capitol April 29th
The CT Commission on Women, Children, Seniors, Equity & Opportunity is inviting you and the families under your care to attend: "Autism: Raising Awareness at the Capitol".

This free event, which takes place on Monday, April 29th from 10:00 a.m. to noon in the North Lobby of the Capitol, aims to raise awareness, enhance understanding, and address challenges confronting the autism community.

The invitation is being extended to families to join and listen to insights from medical professionals, as well as personal stories from individuals with autism and parent advocates who have navigated the journey of raising children on the autism spectrum. Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear from legislators regarding current legislative efforts.

Reminder: Help Available With Unpaid Utility Balances
I have included this information a few times but it is important to know that help is available for those in need of assistance. Please see the graphic below for contact information for the utility companies and the available payment plan options for eligible customers.
After connecting with utility companies, customers may additionally contact PURA’s customer affairs unit for specific questions regarding payment arrangements. As a reminder, utility companies will never call threatening to shut off power and demanding immediate payment. Again, please reach out if you have any questions, comments, or feedback. My contact information is at the bottom of the newsletter

National Volunteer Month Is Here
During National Volunteer Month, I'm proud to shine a spotlight on Connecticut's Student Loan Reimbursement Pilot Program! This initiative, which goes into effect in July, not only encourages volunteerism but also supports our dedicated volunteers by helping alleviate student loan burdens. It's a win-win for community service and financial relief. Let's celebrate the power of giving back and the impact it has on both individuals and communities!
