Dear Neighbor,

Every February, we celebrate and recognize the accomplishments and contributions Black people have made, right here in Connecticut and across the globe as part of Black History Month.

Throughout February, I hope to provide a daily insight, highlighting people, places, and things that are a part of Black History that you may or may not know about.

It is award season and Black History Month. So, of course, we need to highlight the trailblazing Hattie McDaniel. Not only was Hattie McDaniel the first African American to win an Oscar, but she was also the first Black woman to sing on the radio in the United States!

You can read more about Hattie McDaniel by clicking on the image below.

As always, if I can be of assistance, please reach out to me at 860-240-8585 or email me at Derell.Wilson@cga.ct.gov.

Sincerely,

Derell Wilson
State Representative
