Dear Neighbor,

As the voice of the 46th District, it is vital to me that I share a handful of helpful pieces of information that will greatly benefit individuals and families who qualify.

This week's edition will include a tribute to an American civil rights icon, information on a winter snowstorm watch, a new earned income tax credit that puts low-income families first, local and state-wide events, and more.

As always, if I can be of assistance, please reach out to me at 860-240-8585 or email me at Derell.Wilson@cga.ct.gov.

Sincerely,

Derell Wilson
State Representative

Winter Snowstorm Watch

A winter snowstorm watch is in effect for our county of New London. Local weather experts say we should expect mostly rain, some fog, and highs in the 30s. Rain showers will take over Saturday night, and a 1-inch coating of snow will be visible by dawn on Sunday.

Storm Guide

  • Do not tailgate and leave a comfortable distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
  • Ensure your tires are meant for the weather and that your windshield wipers are working properly.
  • Consider having emergency supplies in your vehicle, such as a blanket, warm clothing, a first aid kit, and boots.

Earned Income Tax Credit

Connecticut increased its Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to 40% of the federal credit for the 2024-2025 tax year, providing a significant, refundable tax boost to low-income working families. Eligible residents must file a state income tax return and claim the credit to receive it.

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), or Earned Income Credit (EIC), is a tax benefit for working people with low or moderate incomes. The EITC/EIC is designed to reduce the tax burden on eligible income workers and to supplement their wages. Workers who qualify for the EIC and file a federal tax return can have some or all the federal income tax that was taken out of their pay during the year refunded to them. Workers whose earnings are too small to have paid taxes can also obtain an EITC/EIC. The EITC/EIC also reduces any additional taxes eligible workers may owe.

Workers who raised children must file Form 1040 and must fill out and attach Schedule EIC to be eligible for the tax credit. Married workers must file a joint return to get the EITC/EIC. These workers write “EIC” (or the dollar amount of their credit) on the Earned Income Credit line on the tax form. They do not need to file Schedule EIC. Schedule EIC forms can be obtained by mail or downloaded from the website of the IRS: https://www.irs.gov/. Forms can also be obtained at libraries, post offices, and local IRS offices.

Respiratory Disease Surveillance

The Central Connecticut Health District Epidemiologist publishes weekly reports detailing respiratory virus activity, including influenza, COVID-19, and RSV, based on data from local providers and state surveillance.

These reports provide critical surveillance to track trends, identify outbreaks, and guide public health action within the district. To view the report, click HERE.

Please stay home if you are sick.

Snap & Cash Changes Benefit Dates

Connecticut passed new legislation requiring DSS to spread out SNAP benefit issuance dates throughout the month rather than concentrating them in the first few days.

This change will help reduce congestion at retailers and improve the overall client experience.
