Updates from State Rep. Larry Butler for Feb. 28, 2025

February 28, 2025

February is American Heart Month and I attended a press conference hosted by my colleague, state Rep. Tammy Exum, to share the tragic loss of her husband, Earl, to a "widow maker" heart attack, highlighting the lack of awareness about coronary calcium scans.

Earl was outwardly fit and healthy, with no typical symptoms. But he died suddenly.

Rep. Exum emphasized the importance of the coronary calcium scan, which costs about $150, but is not typically covered by insurance. She called for increased awareness and legislative action to make these scans more accessible.

It's a reminder of all of us to be heart healthy.

Disabled Veterans Tax Relief

The House also voted in support of veterans by passing legislation that provides tax relief for those who are permanently and totally disabled due to their military service.

This bill recognizes the sacrifices made by these veterans and aims to ease their financial burden by reducing property tax obligations, allowing them to keep more of their hard-earned income.

I am proud to support this bill and provide our veterans with the resources and assistance they need.

BPRC Public Hearing

On March 3 at 4:30 P.M.,  The Connecticut Black and Puerto Rican Caucus (BPRC),  will have a public hearing to provide residents an opportunity to share their concerns and perspectives. Established in 1976, the BPRC is a beacon and safeguard for communities of color in the Connecticut legislature.

Longtime Firefighter Passes

Longtime Waterbury firefighter Todd Nugai, 51, passed away on Feb. 14 after a long battle with cancer.

Nugai was a firefighter for 26 years, the Waterbury Observer reported.

Rest in peace.

A fundraiser is being held for Waterbury Detective R.J. Sackett, who was shot in the leg Feb. 13 while chasing armed carjackers.

As Det. Sackett recovers, the community is having a pasta dinner on March 4 at Waterbury PAL, 64 Division St., from 5 to 8 p.m.

The dinner, which includes pasta, salad, garlic bread and dessert, is $20. Take-out is also available.

Wrestler Hits the Century Mark!

Congratulations to Holy Cross High wrestler Anthony Shivas, who recorded his 100th career victory last week, as well as winning his third state Class M title in the 285-pound weight class.

The senior enters the State Open tournament this week with a 31-0 record this year.

Best of luck, Anthony!
