"It takes a lot of degeneration before a country falls into dictatorship, but we should avoid these ends by avoiding these beginnings."Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor
Over the past several weeks, many of you have reached out with deep concern about recent immigration enforcement actions by ICE, as well as the broader rise in hate crimes and dehumanizing rhetoric across our country.
Public safety does not require cruelty, and enforcing the law must never come at the expense of basic human rights.
Coming just after Holocaust Remembrance Day, it is especially painful to acknowledge that anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, anti-immigrant hate, and other forms of bigotry are once again on the rise nationwide. As leaders and as neighbors, we have a responsibility to speak clearly and act decisively in defense of our shared values.
Connecticut is not immune to this troubling trend. Anti-Semitism remains at historically high levels in our state.
In recent years, swastikas were found painted at a Waterford playground, among other places in the state, including Norwich, Weston, Stamford and Darien. In response, our community came together to stand in solidarity, denounce these markers of hate, and recommit to protecting our Jewish neighbors and those of all faiths and backgrounds.
"Never again" means never again for everyone.
I am committed to building a Connecticut where everyone feels safe and respected. Last session, we advanced proposals to consolidate and clarify our hate-crime laws, enabling prosecutors and law enforcement to more effectively address bias-motivated violence—work that aligns with our broader civil rights and public safety goals.
Further, I fought for the expansion of our state's Trust Act, which prevents Connecticut from being drawn into the federal government’s immigration enforcement efforts.
Connecticut is strongest when we lead with compassion, dignity, and respect for one another. This climate of division does real harm to the fabric of our democracy. As your representative, I will continue to support legislation that protects human dignity and strengthens civil rights.
