Dear Neighbor,

January 27 is Holocaust Remembrance Day. On this day, which commemorates the liberation of Auschwitz in 1945, we remember the millions of victims of the Holocaust, the genocide of 6 million Jews and the millions of other victims of Nazi atrocities.

In recent years, the General Assembly has made strides to make the history of marginalized groups an integral part of our student's education. In 2019, I supported Public Act No. 18-24, AN ACT CONCERNING THE INCLUSION OF HOLOCAUST AND GENOCIDE EDUCATION AND AWARENESS IN THE SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM. This bill requires schools to  include Holocaust and genocide education and awareness as part of the social studies curriculum for the school district.

During last session, I have introduced a bill that will strengthen both curriculums. H.B. 6758,  would allow the Department of Education to hire a coordinator focused on providing materials and resources to schools to better implement  essential histories. This bill would ensure that Connecticut’s mandates are effectively implemented across the state.

We must do more to make sure the next generations understand the importance of confronting hate and do not become complicit in discrimination.
