Representative Haddad Recognizes E. O. Smith Sophomore Gabriel Aguero as a Community Hero

June 18, 2020

Mansfield, Conn. – In early April, State Representative Gregory Haddad (D-Mansfield) issued a call for nominations of individuals in Mansfield who are going above and beyond, working and volunteering to help the community through the challenges of social distancing under Covid-19.

This week's honoree is Sophomore Gabriel Aguero at E. O. Smith High SchoolGabe has dedicated time this spring to tutoring younger students through social distancing.

"As a former student and neighbor, Gabe reached out almost immediately looking to see if he could help tutor students during 'School at Home,’” wrote Jeff Burnhm, MMS Science and Math Teacher Jeff Burnham, in his nomination email. "Gabe did an excellent job previewing the work ahead of time and joining in on Zooms to work with kids. At first, he would join me as a co-host during office hours. He did such a great job helping students understand the material that I teamed him up with a particular student who was struggling with distance learning. Gabe was professional and generous with his time.”

“Gabe, thank you for volunteering to help out your peers when so many of us were struggling in the adjustment to the norms of social distancing,” said Rep. Haddad. “As the state begins to reopen, it’s important to reflect on those in our community who took on more to help us through the crisis. Gabe’s efforts are deserving of this recognition.”

Rep. Haddad is still accepting nominations for community heroes. Those who have a nominee in mind can send in a photo, name, and a few sentences about why they are nominating a community hero to Gregory.Haddad@cga.ct.gov.

Previous nominees include Ashley Rancourt, Anne RashLouis GoffinetDr. Neil Moynahanthe Food Service Staff at the Mansfield Schoolstwo groups of local facemask seamstresses, and Sarah Kaufold and the singers of Songs of Comfort.
