Dear Neighbor,

I wanted to reach out to share some updates happening in our district. As we gear up for the upcoming legislative session in February, I have scheduled a series of Office Hours in each community. This will give us the opportunity to have direct conversations and address any concerns or ideas you may have. The fall has been quite eventful, and let's take a look at some of the highlights.

POACT Legislative Leadership Award
Earlier this month, I was honored to receive the Legislative Leadership Award from the Police Officers Association of Connecticut (POACT) for leading the Public Safety & Security Committee in a bipartisan way, working on behalf of the residents of Connecticut.
This recognition is not just mine; it belongs to all of us who have dedicated ourselves to making our state a better place to live, work, and raise families. Together, we have worked tirelessly to address the pressing issues that impact the lives of our fellow residents. This award serves as a validation of our commitment to serving the best interests of Connecticut and its people.

Muddy Brook Fire Department Annual Dinner
I want to thank the Muddy Brook Fire Department in Woodstock for having me at their Annual Dinner this past week.
It was great to celebrate Richard Baron’s 50 years of service to the department, including several years as Fire Chief and as the Fire Marshal for the Town of Woodstock.

Northeastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce
The Northeastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce held the 2023 Business Showcase at EASTCONN last week in Hampton.
I had an amazing opportunity to connect with business owners and leaders in the region, discussing their successes and challenges. I am eager to bring their feedback with me to the Capitol, where I will continue to advocate on their behalf during the upcoming legislative session.

Mansfield Wins the Democracy Cup
It was great to join Connecticut Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas, State Representative Gregg Haddad, Town Manager Ryan Aylesworth, and Mayor Toni Moran earlier this month in Mansfield to receive the “Democracy Cup".
Mansfield was awarded the "Democracy Cup" for having the highest voter turnout amongst medium-sized towns during the 2022 election. This is the first time Mansfield has won the trophy.

Office Hours
My goal is to hold Office Hours in all seven towns in the 50th District before the legislative session starts in February. I am pleased to share the first in the series that has been scheduled. Residents of the district will be able to attend and be part of the dialog. Please see below for some of the first dates scheduled:
  • Woodstock Town Hall (415 CT-169) with Representative Vail & Senator Gordon - Wednesday, November 15th at 6:00 PM
  • Mansfield Public Library (54 Warrenville Rd) - Wednesday, November 15th at 1:30 PM
  • Hampton Town Hall (164 Main Street) - Thursday, November 16th at 5:30 PM
  • Ashford Town Offices (5 Town Hall Road) - Wednesday, November 29th at 6:30 PM
Additionally, I will be hosting a Regional School District 11 (Parish Hill) Discussion with Representative Dubitsky on Thursday, December 7th. The time and location are to be determined and I will keep you updated with additional details.

WFSB CT
On Sunday, October 29th, I was joined by my colleague Senator Paul Cicarella on WFSB - Channel 3's CT23 with Eric Parker to talk about the work of the Public Safety Committee and the recently released State Crime Report for 2022.

Regional District 19 Funding
I'm excited to share with you that E.O. Smith High School / Regional School District 19 has been awarded a grant of $50,000 to expand dual credit offerings.
Dual credit offerings enable more high school students to earn college credits prior to graduation through partnerships formed between high schools and public and private colleges and universities. Accumulating college credits in high school can help students get a jump start in their postsecondary program while saving money.

Volunteer Fire Assistance Grants
Congratulations to the Bungay Fire Brigade. Eastford Independent Fire Co. #1, Hampton Fire Company, & Pomfret Fire Department, on receiving a 2023 Connecticut Volunteer Fire Assistance Grant, which will be used to train personnel and purchase equipment aimed at improving their firefighting capabilities.
These funds are provided through a federal program to support fire departments in towns with fewer than 10,000 people. The Grant is administered by the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP).
