Updates for State Rep. Travis Simms for Nov. 6, 2025

November 6, 2025

There is still a lot of uncertainty coming from the federal government on whether SNAP benefits will be funded through the end of the federal government shutdown. In the meantime, if you are in need of food assistance, local pantries across the state are providing essential emergency assistance. Pantries are also seeking donations to help meet the growing demand.

Please consider making a monetary donation or even donating your time to Connecticut Foodshare if you are able. Click here to volunteer and/or to donate.

Please check the CT Foodshare website for up to date scheduling and if there is adverse weather.

The Norwalk Food Guide

From the city of Norwalk website:

The Norwalk Food Alliance is a network of local food providers, community-based organizations, healthcare providers, municipal agencies, faith-based organizations, and our regional and state food partners working together to improve Norwalk’s food system by addressing food insecurity and food access barriers. Current Norwalk Food Alliance initiatives include the Norwalk Food Guide, Summer Meals site promotion, and information about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Contact Kelley Tomlinson (ktomlinson@norwalkct.gov) with questions or if you have additions/corrections.

The Norwalk Food Guide contains a listing of the available food pantries, mobile food pantries, meal services, and SNAP enrollment assistance locations in the area. Click here to view the full guide. Food guide is available in English and Spanish.

If You're Donating

Food insecurity, or the limited or uncertain access to food, has significant impacts on a person's health and well-being. Here in Norwalk, our local food pantries often depend on the generous donations from our community to help supplement their existing food resources.

If you are donating food, please consider healthy offerings such as foods lower in salt, sugar, and saturated fats. Your mindful donation can help fight hunger AND improve health! See below to learn more about healthy donations and view a helpful checklist for the next time you're shopping.

Special Session

Next Wednesday, Nov. 12, the House of Representatives will be in a Special Session. You can follow along live on the Connecticut Network at ct-n.com or find us on YouTube and Roku.

At this time our potential agenda is likely to include votes to mitigate the negative impacts of massive funding gaps created by the Federal government in the areas of healthcare, food, childcare, WIC, heating assistance and school meals; improving children's mental health; strengthening data privacy and courthouse protections; and addressing Connecticut’s housing shortage.

Support for Jamaica

It’s heartbreaking to see the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, which has already claimed the lives of three Haitians and one Dominican. The storm is now moving toward Jamaica, bringing powerful winds, flooding, and fear to so many who are already struggling.

My heart goes out to every family that’s been affected.

When one part of the Caribbean family hurts, we all feel it.

But I still believe in our people’s strength in the resilience that has carried the islands through countless storms.

They’ve rebuilt before, and we’ll rebuild again together.

Let’s keep Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica lifted in prayer and do what we can to support the relief efforts that will follow. Even the smallest act of kindness can help make a difference right now.

To assist during this difficult time, Optimum has announced that all current Optimum Mobile and Optimum Phone customers can make free calls and send texts (SMS and MMS) from the U.S. to Jamaica through Nov. 30. This initiative ensures that both residential and business customers can stay connected with loved ones during this difficult time.

No action is required—any calls or messages to Jamaica made during this period will automatically have fees waived.

For more details, you can view the official announcement here.

Access Health

Open Enrollment for Access Health CT's (AHCT) health and dental insurance remains on track to begin Saturday, Nov. 1 and end Monday, Dec. 15 for plans beginning at the start of next year. Residents can enroll until Thursday, Jan. 15 for plans beginning in February.

You may have received a letter in the mail warning of healthcare premium price increases starting Jan. 1 due to legislation passed in the U.S. Congress this year. Currently, the federal government is shut down as those price increases are debated and negotiated.

As it stands, state officials in Connecticut are encouraging residents to hold off on enrolling in the AHCT plan as the debate continues over those price increases. If you are able, please wait to enroll until the issue is fully resolved.
