Venture Smith was a slave who, while in Connecticut, earned and saved enough money to buy his freedom, his wife's and children's, as well as others. Born in 1729, Smith eventually owned over 130 acres of land, including a waterfront compound on the Salmon River with three houses, a dry dock, a blacksmith shop, and several warehouses before he passed away in 1805.
