Government Shutdown Resources

As the federal government shutdown continues, many Connecticut residents are facing uncertainty. United Way of Connecticut’s 211 has published a new resource to help. Click here to take a look at the resource that outlines the current status of federal programs and provides direct links to state and community resources for those affected.

211 is not directly impacted by the federal government shutdown and continues to operate 24/7/365. It’s never been more important to connect residents with their trained contact specialists, who provide personalized, confidential assistance for basic needs. In many cases, a single call results in multiple new referrals and supports, drawn from their up-to-date database of more than 40,000 community resources.

National Drug Take Back

Saturday, October 25th is National DEA Drug Take-Back Day. This is an opportunity to drop off expired, unwanted or unused controlled substances that you may have in your home.

Officials will collect pills, tablets, capsules, and other solid forms of prescription drug. Liquids (including intravenous solutions), syringes, and illegal drugs will not be accepted.

Drop-off is from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at the Hamden Police Department (2900 Dixwell Ave.).

Community Events

On Saturday, October 24 from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. be a part of Quinnipiac's Annual Boomer's Boo Bash, a Halloween celebration for the Hamden, North Haven, and Greater New Haven communities! On Sunday, October 26 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. take a hike and explore the fall foliage at Sleeping Giant State Park (200 Mt. Carmel Avenue, Main Parking). The hike will be led by Chris Fagan, retired staff of the U.S. Forest Service and an expert on the trees and flowers of this area. He will explain the science behind our trees’ miraculous transformation.

All hikers should bring water and have proper clothing and footwear for conditions. Children must be 8 or older. Sorry, no pets.

Registration is required. Please register each hiker separately. There will be a wait list so please cancel if you find that you cannot attend. If cancelled due to weather, you will be contacted by email that morning. Click here to register.

Join the Movement Community, a free eight-week, in-person group experience for people who are living with a life-disrupting loss. The group gathers on Sundays through November 23 from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. at Sleeping Giant State Park.

It combines movement—like walking, hiking, or biking—with intentional grief support, held in community with others who get it. A trained E-Motion Facilitator leads each group of 15–20 grievers.

Each week, the group gathers in a Sacred Circle to connect, reflect, and then move together toward a shared distance goal—like walking or running a 10K. Between gatherings, participants receive a grief-informed email with a weekly grief concept to consider and move with, along with a simple, supportive movement practice to integrate into your week.
