Continuing to Fight for Connecticut's Wildlife Protection
May 15, 2024As the Chair of the Environment Committee, I am dedicated to protecting Connecticut's wildlife and natural habitats. We need to address the unintended harm caused by certain rodenticides. The use of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) has led to the poisoning of not only rodents, but also the raptors and mammals crucial to our ecosystem. These poisons cause internal bleeding and death in animals like eagles, hawks, and owls, which inadvertently consume poisoned rodents. We aimed to introduce a ban on SGARs this year, but faced unexpected challenges. However, we remain committed to finding effective and sustainable solutions. We are exploring alternative methods, such as rat and mice birth control, which have shown promise in urban areas like Bushnell Park. For more details and to hear my thoughts on this critical issue and our ongoing efforts, I invite you to read this article from the Hartford Courant.
