Preventing Seniors Scams with Attorney General Tong

June 5, 2025

You're invited to an engaging discussion in Stratford about the steps seniors can take to prevent becoming victims of scams. Please join Attorney General William Tong, State Representative Kaitlyn Shake, and me on Tuesday, June 10 at 11 a.m. in the Lovell Room at Stratford Library.

Elder fraud is a serious and growing issue as criminals exploit seniors to steal money or personal information. They pose as family members, government officials, or tech support agents with phony phone calls, fake sweepstakes, investment scams, and email-based cons.

Many older victims lose their life savings, and the emotional toll can lead to depression, anxiety, and a loss of trust in others. Since elder fraud often goes unreported -- due to embarrassment, fear, or confusion -- it's difficult to measure its true scale. Experts agree is it significantly under recognized and under addressed.

Thankfully, the Attorney General's Office offers the Elder Justice Hotline at 1-860-808-5555 to help older adults in Connecticut seek information, assistance, and justice. The hotline is intended as an additional resource to connect individuals seeking information to the appropriate state agencies. The hotline is staffed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

I strongly encourage everyone to attend, especially seniors and their caretakers. This is a great opportunity to gain the knowledge and acquire tools you need to protect yourself and your family.
