State is Addressing Sinkhole on Route 113

The state has notified me that it is actively developing a long-term plan to address the sinkhole on Route 113 near Sikorsky Airport in the Lordship section of Stratford. According to Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto, decades of repeated and forceful salt water movements have compromised the underground pipes, which are now in need of full replacement.

CTDOT is currently completing essential survey work in the area and will soon begin collecting soil samples. These steps are critical to informing the engineering and design phase of the project. The goal is to build a new headwall and endwall system that will stabilize the area, prevent future erosion, protect the new pipes from damage, and ensure proper water flow.

Commissioner Eucalitto emphasized that this will be a large-scale and time-intensive project due to the site's proximity to the airport, the presence of critical utilities, and the complex regulatory environment surrounding coastal infrastructure. In addition, crews will need to install cofferdams to create a dry working environment, as the work will take place near the water.

The state is coordinating closely with the Town of Stratford to ensure the project moves forward as smoothly and safely as possible. I will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as new information becomes available.
