Updates from State Rep. Gregory Haddad for April 25, 2025

April 25, 2025

Committee work is nearly complete, which means full sessions will begin to ramp up next week and in May. The legislature's next full session is scheduled for April 28.

In addition to priority bills on housing, special education, and increasing Medicaid reimbursement rates, the legislature will also consider proposals on creating a permanent child tax credit.

The child tax credit would provide families ($100,000 single filer, $160,000 head of household, or $200K joint filer) $150 per child for up to three kids. Plus there is a phase out for every $1,000 earned above those thresholds, with households losing 10% of the credit’s value.

While the proposed credit perhaps isn't as much as I'd hope for, it's a good start on something that should have been in place long ago. The measure will be considered by, and hopefully passed, by the full House.

Mansfield Transfer Station Hours Expanded

The town of Mansfield is launching a pilot program that will expand hours at the Mansfield Transfer Station, starting May 7.

The new hours will be:

  • Wednesdays 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. (changed from Tuesdays)
  • Thursdays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and
  • Saturdays 7 a.m. to 4 p.m..

The Swap Shop, a building at the Transfer Station where residents can drop off and pick up items that are still useful, will be open during public hours of operation when volunteers are available. This popular service helps keep items out of the waste stream that still have useful life, and is a great way to share resources among community members.

The plan calls for the Transfer Station to return to the original schedule of public hours during the cold-weather months beginning November 2.  Those hours are:

  • Tuesdays and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and
  • Thursdays noon to 4 p.m..

To learn more about the full services, or to take a video tour of the Transfer Station, visit the website at https://www.mansfieldct.gov/1564/Transfer-Station

Autism Awareness at the Capitol

April was Autism Awareness Month, when autism is globally celebrated by supporters who advocate for acceptance and understanding.

On April 28, the Commission on Women, Children, Seniors, Equity and Opportunity is hosting Raising Awareness at the Capitol, which aims to raise awareness, enhance understanding, and address challenges faced by the autism community while advocating for legislative action and supportive policies.

The event begins at 10 a.m. in room 310, featuring insights from medical professionals, personal stories from individuals with autism and parent advocates, and discussions with legislators on current legislative efforts supporting the autism community.

At 12:30 p.m., organizations from across the state will participate by sharing information about the resources and services they provide to the autism community.

This event is free and open to the public.
