Yesterday the House passed HB 6374, An Act Concerning Sexual Misconduct on College Campuses, in unanimous bipartisan support to pass this legislation. Through this bill, students attending higher education institution in Connecticut can anonymously report incidents of sexual misconduct without fear of repercussion for drug or alcohol use. This is imperative to creating a culture in which students feel comfortable reporting assault and seeking support.
While in college, one in five women are sexually assaulted and one in sixteen men are sexually assaulted. Ninety percent of these sexual assaults are never reported. HB 6374 allows survivors and witnesses of sexual assault to safely come forward.
The March Newington Community Champion Award goes to Jan Kritzman for her tireless work as an advocate for breast cancer insurance.
For millions around the world the threat of human trafficking is very persistent and tangible. This menace is now becoming more prevalent locally as cases of human trafficking in Connecticut rise. On Thursday, February 13, I was pleased to join State Rep. Jillian Gilchrest and the Newington Rotary Club to bring the End It Movement to the Capitol to shine a light on human trafficking.
I had a great time at John Paterson Elementary School in Newington! We had a simulated lesson where students "try out" passing a bill into a law.
