Haddad named to Reapportionment Committee

February 16, 2021

State Representative Gregory Haddad (D-Mansfield) has been named by Speaker of the House Matthew Ritter (D-Hartford) to serve on Connecticut's Reapportionment Committee. Reapportionment is the process of drawing electoral district boundaries with the purpose of establishing and maintaining voting districts that are faithful to the principle of one-person, one-vote and a reflection of demographic changes.

"I thank the Speaker for this assignment which is critically important to our democracy," Rep. Haddad said. "Setting district boundaries fairly demonstrates our national commitment to the principle that every citizen matters equally. I’m committed to an open and transparent process that prioritizes public input as we draw new lines."

"Gregg has the skillset to get this important job done," said Speaker Ritter. "I am confident Gregg will work across party lines to ensure accurate voter representation at the state and national levels."

In Connecticut, the drawing of legislative and congressional district lines is largely the responsibility of the General Assembly. Using the official U.S. Census Bureau population counts , reapportionment evaluates voting districts for state representative, state senator and congressional districts to reflect changing demographics.

The calendar for reapportionment this year has been complicated by the pandemic. The Census Bureau would normally submit data by the end of March but has delayed delivery until September 30 which is 15 days after the committee is due to recommend new voting maps to the legislature. According to our state Constitution, the Committee is dissolved after its September deadline and it is replaced by a similarly comprised Commission which has a November 30 deadline for drawing the new map.
