Stamford Food Drive

March 24, 2021

This past Saturday, I held a food drive in the South End of Stamford.

We have a homeless population and low-income households that could use some support.

There are no supermarkets that serve the entire South End and it is a challenge for residents in this area to access food. While there is a Shoprite in Shippan, with a friendly and hardworking staff, it is not easily accessible to those with limited transportation options.

My friend Sohail Rana, a driver with the Independent Driver’s Guild Union (IDG), called me and said the NY Islamic Center was donating boxes with 23 pounds of groceries!

This was great news as I know there are people in our city who could use support during these difficult times.

Rania Bensadok, my intern who organized the food drive, reached out to the Pacific House Shelter. The city agreed to let us use the parking lot of the Latham Wilder building in the South End.

I walked around the neighborhood to let people know that we were donating food, and by word of mouth, in one hour, the truck was empty. Of the 80 boxes, twenty went to the Pacific House Shelter.

Sohail joined with Adam Aboubakar from the IDG and offered to help organize a couple more food drives in the coming months. My office will keep everyone updated on the next locations, but we are aiming to serve the West Side next.
In these hard times, we cannot forget our neighbors who are struggling most. Again, I would like to thank the NY Islamic Center, the Independent Drivers Guild, the Pacific House Shelter, and the city of Stamford.
