Improving New Haven Line Rail Service

June 21, 2021

Today I took part in a news conference with Governor Ned Lamont, Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Senator Richard Blumenthal, Rep. Rosa DeLauro, Mayor Laura Hoydick, and colleagues of mine in the General Assembly to announce the Time for CT Plan.

This historic initiative seeks to improve rail service on the New Haven Line by reducing travel times, repairing bridges, and modernize signal systems (while also creating thousands of jobs).

Highlights of the plan include:

  • A new “super express” service can save 10 minutes between New Haven and NYC by 2022
  • The “super express” service can save up to 25 minutes in travel time savings by 2035 with planned infrastructure improvements
  • More direct service to New York City
  • Expanded rail service between Connecticut cities
  • An $ 8 – 10 billion comprehensive investment program that can provide additional capacity and improve speeds and reliability. This program:
    • Includes the TIME-1 project, which is already in design to improve speeds between Stratford and Bridgeport
    • Completes the signal modernization to allow up to 100 mph operation
    • Straightens curves and improves drainage
    • Replaces movable bridges and rebuilds undergrade bridges
    • Makes improvements within the existing right of way to minimize community impacts
