I hope you are continuing to enjoy our wet, hot, and humid summer. I write to you directly from the Faroe Islands where fishermen slaughter hundreds of dolphins and pilot whales every year in a barbaric and cruel form called “grind.” I traveled here after witnessing the damage, death, and destruction of dolphin habitats at "The Cove" in Japan for the aquarium industry.

The savage killing of marine wildlife in the Faroe Islands is not based on a need for survival as it might have been when this practice became a so-called tradition. What is even more frustrating is there is no need to kill these animals because they are not safe to consume. Pilot whale meat has the highest concentrations of Mercury and PCBs (in the blubber) in the entire food chain. This whale hunt simply adds highly toxic meat amongst the Faroe Island’s existing variety of food at its supermarkets.

During the last "grind" a couple of days ago, the world witnessed the brutal massacre of pilot whales. Video captured a man using a saw behind the head of a juvenile whale as it was screaming in agony and its tail kept flipping up and down. It is hard to see entire whale families decimated in this brutal and unnecessary way. This is easily one of the most extreme examples of animal cruelty I have ever seen.

Marine mammals are a crucial component of the fight for our own lives. They are keystone species that operate our life support system by helping maintain phytoplankton, which produces oxygen in the air we breathe. The ocean is at the threshold of collapse, and we must take action to protect these amazing creatures.

As a state, we should review what products we get from the Faroe Islands, including their farmed salmon, and stop purchasing them in Connecticut. We cannot support the Faroe Islands if they continue destroying entire gene pools of mammals that live in our ocean. Some of our top-rated restaurants in Connecticut boast about serving FAROESE SALMON. If you see this dish offered on the menu, I suggest you leave while explaining why you cannot support a business that supplies its food from cruel and barbaric Faroese hunting practices.

I will be providing more updates from the Faroe Islands in the coming weeks.
