Updates from State Rep. Gary Turco for April 3, 2026

April 3, 2026

State Sen. Matt Lesser and I had the honor of attending the retirement party of one true good guys in public service -- Parks and Recreation Superintendent Bill DeMaio, who worked for the town for decades.

We presented Bill with a proclamation noting that he brought residents and nonresidents together though community programs such as the Life Be in It Extravaganza, Motorcycle Madness, Newington Goes Country, Food Truck Friday, and Night of Lights, among others.

He also played a huge role in the construction of the Mortensen Community Center, now a central gathering place for residents.

Bill is a champion for ALL residents, evidenced by his commitment to accessibility. He ensured that Newington parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, and walkways accommodated individuals of all abilities.

Congratulations, Bill, on your much-deserved retirement and thank you for your years of improving Newington.

Supporting Oral Health Care

Several of my colleagues and the Connecticut Oral Health Initiative (COHI) led a bipartisan press conference last week calling for passage of House Bill 5303, which would allow licensed dental hygienists to provide preventive oral health care directly in the homes of homebound Connecticut residents.

The need is significant. According to DataHaven, approximately 400,000 Connecticut adults are transport insecure, unable to leave home due to lack of transportation. Nearly half of those adults have not seen a dentist in the past year. For those who also live with a disability, that number climbs to 55%. Among Connecticut’s Medicaid-enrolled adults, half did not see a dentist even once in a given year between 2015 and 2020.

Celebrating Hindu Culture

Happy Holi! I was honored to join the vibrant celebration at Vallabhdham Temple in Newington’s 20th District, where community members came together to celebrate Hindu culture and welcome the arrival of spring. Holi is a beautiful reminder of renewal, joy, and the triumph of light over darkness, and it was wonderful to share in the traditions, colors, and spirit of unity that make this festival so special.

Session Days Next Week

The House will be back in session two days next week. Follow along live on YouTube or CT-N.

Donate Life Month

There will be a flag-raising event on Monday, April 6, at 4 p.m. at the flag pole outside Town Hall in honor of National Donate Life Month and to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation.

CT Renter's Rebate Program

Connecticut’s Renters’ Rebate Program is now open to eligible renters who are elderly or living with a disability and meet certain income requirements.

Qualified applicants may receive rebates of up to $900 for married couples and $700 for single individuals. The rebate amount is determined using a graduated income scale, as well as the total rent and utility payments (excluding telephone) made during the previous calendar year.

Applications must be submitted through your local municipality’s assessor’s office or a designated social service agency. The application period is now open and will run through Sept. 30. Please note that no extensions are permitted, and all applications must be received by the municipality no later than Sept. 30.

Honoring Officer Petlik

From the town of Newington's website:

The Town Council is proudly recognizing Master Police Officer Arkadiusz Petlik for his nearly 18 years of dedicated service to the Newington community.

Known for his professionalism, courage, and genuine commitment to keeping others safe, Officer Petlik has made a meaningful impact throughout his career. He joined the Newington Police Department as a patrol officer on Aug. 13, 2007, and went on to serve in several specialized roles, including as a K-9 officer, where he brought skill, care, and dedication to his work.  Petlik was also a valued member of the department’s Emergency Response Team, first joining in 2008 and returning for additional terms in 2016 and 2022.

Over the years, Petlik received numerous honors, including the Life Saving Award three times.  In 2022, he was promoted to Master Police Officer, a well-earned acknowledgment of his experience, leadership, and dedication.

Colleagues and community members alike have come to know Petlik for his strong work ethic, and integrity. His contributions have left a lasting mark on the department and the town he served.

The Town Council extends its heartfelt thanks to Officer Petlik for his years of service and wishes him all the best in a happy, healthy, and fulfilling retirement.
