Haddad Statement On GOP Budget Veto

October 3, 2017

Rep. Gregg Haddad issued the following statement Tuesday after the House of Representative met in a special session for the purpose of voting on Governor Dannel Malloy’s veto of the Republican state budget:

“After a publicly calling for the legislature to override the Governor's veto of their budget, Republicans refused to make the motion that would begin debate on whether to override. The rules require someone – anyone – who voted for the GOP budget to make the motion to reconsider the governor’s veto. But not a single Republican rose today to make the motion -- despite their "demand" to vote. Remarkable!

“Truth is: The Republican proposal could not get the necessary two-thirds to override the veto. The GOP budget makes Draconian cuts to our colleges and universities, destroys good government reforms and underfunds our long-term pension obligations by hundreds of millions of dollars.

“Let’s stop focusing on that bad proposal and let's move on and begin real talks to resolve our differences.”
