I hope you are all keeping cool in this heat and enjoying summer! If you or anyone you know is in need of a cooling center, please call 2-1-1 or go to 211.ct.org to find the updated published list of cooling locations. In this week's email you will find information about new bills signed into law, local and state resources, and more.
I am proud to be named a "New Voice for the Environment" by the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters (CTLCV) as your State Legislator!
CTLCV also grades legislators on a scale from 0% to 100% based on their votes on environmental priority bills in committees, the Senate, and the House. The 2025 final score is the average of the legislator’s votes on key bills. I was one of 34 members in the General Assembly to receive a score of 100%. This recognition is a great honor and responsibility.
At a time when we are seeing more catastrophic effects of climate change, I believe it is critical that we as legislators take action. I am proud to have voted for policies that support protecting the environment, preserving our beautiful natural resources, and fighting for environmental justice here in Stratford and across Connecticut. | A Commitment to Maternal and Infant Health Services |
As a Registered Nurse specializing in women and maternal-child health for over 10 years, I know that supporting maternal and infant health doesn't begin in the delivery room.
It starts with access to care, education, and resources, long before pregnancy.
Connecticut committed to providing access to maternal health services during the 2025 legislative session with the passage of HB 7102, An Act Concerning Maternal and Infant Health Care, and HB 7214, An Act Concerning Maternal Health.
As a proud co-sponsor of this legislation, I am thrilled that these bills were signed into law this week!
HB 7102 requires the state to develop a strategic plan to increase the number of birth centers and birthing hospitals in parts of the state with high percentages of Medicaid recipients and limited access to these facilities.
The bill also expands perinatal mental health services and strengthens family support, including programs that aid fathers in supporting maternal health.
HB 7214 enhances hospital transparency and accountability in maternal care by establishing a task force to assess the availability of perinatal mental health care services and identify care gaps. It also calls for an advisory committee to study doula-friendly practices in hospitals.
HB 7102 and HB 7214 affirm Connecticut's dedication to ensuring safe, high-quality care, regardless of race, income, or zip code.

| Protecting our Seniors and Veterans |
Seniors and veterans deserve the strongest resources we can provide. That’s why my colleagues and I passed important legislation to expand services for both groups.
Our goal is to ensure they can easily access healthcare, financial support, and community programs. By removing barriers, we aim to make it simpler for them to obtain the assistance they need. We are committed to policies that meet their needs and support all the veterans and seniors in our communities. |

| Disability Independence Day |

Often called the “Forgotten War,” the Korean conflict was anything but forgettable for those who served. Thousands of brave Americans answered the call, including many from right here in Connecticut. Every year on July 27th, we pause to remember their courage, honor their sacrifice, and ensure their legacy is never overlooked. They didn’t ask for recognition, but they deserve it. |

| West Nile Virus in Connecticut |
According to the CT Mosquito Management Program, mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile Virus in Bridgeport, Stamford, and Easton. There have been no reported human cases of West Nile Virus in Connecticut so far this season.
Residents should take steps to prevent mosquito bites at this time of year. Those steps include the following:
- Minimize time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
- While outdoors, use mosquito repellents containing an EPA-registered active ingredient, including DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol (PMD), or 2-undecanone. EPA registration of skin-applied repellent products indicates that they have been evaluated and approved for human safety and effectiveness when applied according to instructions on the label.
- Wear shoes, socks, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods of time, or when mosquitoes are more active. Clothing should be light-colored, loose-fitting, and made of tightly woven materials that keep mosquitoes away from the skin.
- Wear clothing and gear treated with permethrin, an insecticide that kills or repels mosquitoes and ticks.
- Be sure door and window screens are tight-fitting and in good repair.
- When sleeping outdoors, use tents or mosquito netting in an unscreened structure. Treat camping gear with permethrin when possible.
- Cover strollers and baby carriers with mosquito nets when outside.
For more information on the latest testing results and locations, visit the CT Mosquito Management Program and the CT Agricultural Experiment Station.
