In this week's email, you can learn how you can find information from ACLU CT and the Department of Education about your rights when interacting with immigration officials, learn about a new SNAP update from DSS, and more.  If you have any questions, concerns, or if my office can be of assistance to you, please call my office at any time or email me at kaitlyn.shake@cga.ct.gov.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

As we approach Martin Luther King Jr. Day, let's take a moment to reflect on the extraordinary legacy of a leader whose vision of justice, equality, and nonviolent resistance transformed our nation and inspired the world. Dr. King's unwavering commitment to civil rights reminds us of the power of courage, compassion, and collective action to create meaningful change. Let us honor his memory by recommitting ourselves to the pursuit of equity, inclusion, and unity in our communities.

CT For All Emergency Funds Press Conference

On Tuesday, January 13th, I joined fellow legislators, CT For All, and advocates to urge the Governor to continue to spend the $500 million Emergency Response Fund passed by the legislature during November's Special Session. The Emergency Response Fund can be used to cover the federal funding gaps we are continuing to face here in Connecticut. The funding can be used for food assistance, health insurance, and more.

We are calling for action now, a few weeks out from the 2026 Legislative Session, to ensure families, seniors, and all residents have access to the resources and programs they rely on.

ALICE Roundtable at Sterling House Community Center

On Wednesday night, January 14th, I joined United Way of Western and Coastal Connecticut for a roundtable discussion with ALICE families from Stratford at the Sterling House Community Center. This was a great opportunity to connect with families from across Stratford who shared their experiences with affordability challenges in our community. This conversation was valuable to understand how we can do more to improve financial stability for working families. We covered priority topics including housing, food insecurity, and childcare costs. I will continue advocating for these issues and fighting for financial relief for working families this session. I was thrilled to be invited alongside the Stratford Delegation and join Senator Gaston and Representative Gresko for this important discussion.

Moving Beyond Implications 2026 Conference

On Thursday, January 15th, I attended the 3rd Annual Moving Beyond Implications. This event creates an opportunity for researchers to present policy-related scholarships to legislators and other policymakers. This event allowed legislators to hear directly from researchers, ask questions, and create space for evidence-based policymaking in Connecticut.

I had the pleasure of attending the research presentation on Energy and Technology. The main focus of the session was Grid Resilience Assessment where topics addressed reviewed Electric Vehicle Charging, The Future of Nuclear Power, and how Connecticut can prepare for critical climate challenges in the future. I also had the opportunity to attend the research presentation for Public Health. In this briefing, we discussed potential public health and health disparities due to the termination of federal healthcare insurance subsidies, effects in overdose prevention centers, healthcare for newborns and pregnant women, and more. These conversations help guide our work as we head into another legislative session and begin to make our legislative priorities.

ACLU Know Your Rights

Some communities are on edge after reports of immigration enforcement have increased across the country and here in Connecticut.  Regardless of your immigration status, you have guaranteed rights under the Constitution.

The ACLU of Connecticut has prepared a comprehensive Immigrants' Rights & Resources Guide below.  Learn more about your rights as an immigrant if ICE Agents approach you.

Department of Education K-12 Public Schools Guidance

The Connecticut State Department of Education has provided guidance to every public school district in response to questions regarding immigration enforcement activities. Some parents may have questions about how this policy change could affect school operations, student privacy, and the safeguarding of students while in school. Please read below for more details.

Department of Social Services SNAP Update

Connecticut passed new legislation requiring the Department of Social Services to spread out SNAP benefit issuance dates throughout the month rather than concentrating them in the first few days. This change will help reduce congestion at retailers and improve the overall client experience. SNAP users can expect this change to begin on March 1st, 2026.

Department of Labor Joins Multistate Worker Protection Alliance

The Connecticut Department of Labor joined a Multistate Worker Protection Alliance. The alliance includes Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York. This collaborative will share data and intelligence to fortify worker protections, support businesses, and strengthen labor law enforcement across the region. Under this agreement, the participating states will be able to share information and resources to address critical workforce issues in the state.

Emergency Response Funds for United Way of Connecticut

Earlier this week, Governor Lamont approved additional funding from the state’s recently created Emergency State Response Reserve that has been allocated to the United Way of Connecticut. United Way will use this funding to hire 11 additional contact specialists to answer phones at 2-1-1. These additional contact specialists will enable 2-1-1 to handle an additional 1,000 calls per week. While the contact specialists will be able to handle calls on all issues, their addition will be particularly helpful as United Way anticipates an increase in call volume in the coming weeks due to the new SNAP requirements that were recently approved with the passage of H.R. 1 by Congress and signed by President Trump.
