Dear Neighbor,

I would like to invite you all to join me, State Senator Mae Flexer, State Comptroller Sean Scanlon, Town of Pomfret officials, and the Connecticut State Police for a Highway Dedication Ceremony in honor of State Trooper Irving H. Nelson. The Highway Dedication Ceremony will take place on Monday, October 27th, at 4:30 p.m. at the Pomfret Volunteer Fire Department. A section along Route 97 in Pomfret will be dedicated to Trooper Nelson of New Haven, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty in Pomfret on April 6th, 1928.

On that day, Trooper Nelson responded to a call made to Connecticut State Police Station No. 5 about a report of two men in the area wanted in connection with an armed robbery in Springfield, Massachusetts, earlier that day. The two men were spotted at a gas station in Willimantic, and Trooper Nelson was directed to follow them on his motorcycle north toward Putnam. During the pursuit, there was an exchange of gunfire between the two men and Trooper Nelson. Two bullets hit Trooper Nelson, causing him to pull off the road and collapse, tragically resulting in his death.

This segment along Route 97 in Pomfret will be dedicated to honor Trooper Nelson's legacy within the Connecticut State Police. His bravery and sacrifice that day in April 1928 remain a significant part of Connecticut's law enforcement history to this day. The dedication along Route 97 in Pomfret will serve as a reminder of his heroic acts for years to come. I hope you will join me for this ceremony to honor Trooper Nelson's life and commitment to his service.
