I had the opportunity to read to a third-grade class at Braeburn Elementary School this week, marking Read Across America Week and the beginning of Women's History Month.

This week I was joined by Dr. Ed Schuster, a cardiologist at Stamford Hospital, and my fellow lawmakers to raise awareness for Calcium Coronary Scans. These tests save lives by measuring the severity of blockages in your heart. Heart disease is the number one killer of adults in the US, but it does not have to be. In this week's update, in addition to looking ahead on key legislative issues in Hartford I'll detail why it is so important for you to get the test.

Next Wednesday, I will help to raise awareness of heart health with a "Heart to Heart" press conference. The event will recognize American Heart Month, provide information about coronary calcium scans, and the importance of the legislation that we passed last session.

These priorities reflect our recognition that special education is the biggest budget wildcard for municipalities, increased housing and decreased homelessness are critical to the state's future economic health, rising costs and a reduced workforce are making childcare hard to obtain for many families, and protecting our environment has never been more critical.

Women-owned and child care businesses across Connecticut have an exciting opportunity to secure funding to support and grow their companies. The Women’s Business Development Council is now accepting applications for two grant programs designed to help businesses at various stages of development.

On Monday the country will celebrate the legacy of one of our greatest civil rights leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
