GOP fails to override governor's budget veto; now is the time for a bipartisan agreement

After the state House of Representatives met Oct. 3 to consider overriding the veto of the GOP-backed budget, the Republicans refused to call the question for a vote. Now, it is time for us to work together and compromise with the governor and the Republicans to reach a bipartisan agreement on a final budget. To move Connecticut forward, we need to adopt a spending package that invests in our workforce, makes long-term structural changes, and provides municipalities with additional budget flexibility.

CT Needs New School Funding Formula

Each year, more than $2 billion in state education aid is distributed to towns and cities through entirely arbitrary block grants. There is no strategic approach that reflects the state's priorities, the needs of students or what cities and towns can afford. There is no "formula." That's why the way the state distributes school aid is now in the courts. It is the responsibility of the legislative branch, working with the executive branch, to adopt a fair school finance system for Connecticut.

Despite the fiscal challenges of the 2017 legislative session, the Bridgeport delegation passed key bills that will steady the city’s financial footing, increase economic development, reduce Bridgeport’s unfunded pension liability and create an entertainment hub downtown. These pieces of legislation will not only take Bridgeport decades into the future, but it will also allow the city to become a regional job creator and leader in renewable energy. Even in this tough economic climate, I am pleased that as a legislative delegation we came together to deliver for Bridgeport!
